This book is a collection of essays at the intersection of architecture and climate change. Neither a collective lament nor an inventory of architectural responses, the essays consider cultural values ascribed to climate and ask how climate reflects our conception of what architecture is and does. Which materials and conceptual infrastructures render climate legible, knowable, and actionable, and what are their spatial implications? How do these interrelated questions offer new vantage points on the architectural ramifications of climate change at the interface of resiliency, sustain- ability, and ecotechnology? Climates also contains a dossier of precedents for thinking about architecture and climate change drawn from a number of leading practitioners. New approaches to understanding climate in architecture make this book invaluable. This publication is a project by The Avery Review, a journal produced by the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

First two numbers of the extremely rare periodical written entirely by Adolf Loos (his first separately published work), of which only five numbers appeared. Original stapled wraps, totally uncut; 12 p. per issue (excluding printed wrappers); with a total of 5 ill. (4 from drawings and one from a photograph), exclusive of advertisements. Das Andere was "¿a journal for the introduction of Western Civilization in Austria'", in which Loos "discussed the daily life of his contemporaries, and criticized them relentlessly. As a participant in most of the city's artistic events, he arduously defended endeavors at new expressions against the distrust or hostility of the public." (Tournikiotis, Adolf Loos, 1994, p. 14). According to Tournikiotis, Loos' writings are central to the question of his role as a modernist architect and his more recent rediscovery as a forerunner of post-modernism. Because of its newspaper format and limited audience (Loos' fellow Viennese), Das Andere is much rarer than most art periodicals of the period. Covers slightly soiled; original staples rusted but present; otherwise very good.

Le Corbusier's (1887-1965) "Poesie sur Alger," written in 1942 and first published in 1950, is a self-mocking examination of 13 intensive years of ultimately abortive work, during which Le Corbusier devoted himself to the drawing up of extensive urban plans for Algiers. Numerous additional plans followed on his first trip to Algeria in 1931. The architect dreamed of installing Algiers as the southernmost point of the cultural connection between the littoral states of the Mediterranean, between Paris, Barcelona and Rome--as an "Islamic pole," as he called it. The decision to publish his very personal and self-illustrated thoughts on a "plan directeur" for Algiers marks an important point in Le Corbusier's development. The publication provides many insights into the inner life and world of thought of the pioneer of architectural modernism.

The safety of a landscape and a challenging topography, which are wished unalterable, a kind of guarantor of an universal harmony, was setting and place for a designed building in contemplation / understanding of nature, not being, however, mimetic or passive, but generous identification and active interpretation. See yourself as the rocks before thoroughly conditioned the shape, gain cut and special sculptural force against the white plaster and become into spectacular fireworks´ project." - Alexandre Alves Costa, architect

When Álvaro Siza finished what is known as the Boa Nova Tea House in the early 1960s, it marked the beginning of his career. Set in a challenging topography, the building stands as a symbol of architecture’s identification with, and active interpretation of, the landscape. The composition of its low, volumetric expressiveness and surrounding rocks demands a respectful attentiveness, which until recently had been steadily deteriorating. Under the supervision of Siza, a full restoration of the building’s public spaces and a deeper intervention in its service areas has been undertaken. Beautifully photographed, with plans and original sketches by the architect.

Architectural structures create the environment in which they are situated, while at the same time describing that environment. Complex forms, such as the twist, offer the architect a tool to shape an environment with a visible smoothness that disguises the space’s complexity and precision. But twisted structures present a double-challenge for architects and builders. To create such structures, it is necessary not only to design them, but to design the method of constructing them. For some geometries, it is enough to take a conventional building method, or an already extant tool and modify it slightly. But more often than not, completely new tools and methods need to be figured out. This process of re-engineering, rethinking, and reimagining leads to an increasing and progressively more intimate awareness of material, texture, and detail. This book charts the journey of SYSTEMarchitects from the folded geometries of the seminal BURST house exhibited at MOMA’s renowned 2008 show to the curves, tucks and twisted spaces that followed. It records five years of experimentation with pre-fabricated and iterative techniques, low cost materials, and algorithmic design all in service of projects made for everyday use. It examines the role of parametric design in the domestic sphere, and It explores twisted volumes, from large scale structures to the very surface of the twist itself, offering a whole new animated direction for architecture.

‘Cycle Space’ is the first book to view the city through the lens--or rearview mirror--of the bicycle. It features portraits of eight major cities and their respective cycling cultures: New York, Chicago, Portland, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Budapest, São Paolo, Singapore and Sydney. Each of these cities has seen a groundswell of cyclists taking to its streets in recent years. From death-defying bike messengers to hipsters with a taste for cycle chic to commuters simply riding to work, cycling is now being viewed as more than just an alternative: it's practical; it's cool; it's green. In ‘Cycle Space’, architecture professor and cycling enthusiast Steven Fleming (or Dr. Behooving, as he is known to those who follow his blog, Behooving Moving) suggests new ways of designing better cities, thereby reducing emissions, commute times, ill health and sprawl in the process. Not only can architecture and urban design begin to optimize conditions for cycling; they can also take inspiration from the aesthetics and ethics of cycling as well. Fleming argues that understanding why more and more people are choosing bikes is key for discovering the full potential of the bicycle as a transformative force in the design of our cities. Cycle Space is a must-read for anyone interested in the nexus of architecture, cycling and urban design.

At a time when climate and ethics have become so important to architectural debate, this book proposes an entirely new way for architects to engage with these core issues.

Drawing on Tetsuro Watsuji‘s (1889-1960) philosophy, the book illuminates climate not as a collection of objective natural phenomena, but as a concrete form of bond in which "who we are"—the subjective human experience—is indivisibly intertwined with the natural phenomena. The book further elucidates the inter-personal nature of climatic experiences, criticizing a view that sees atmospheric effects of climate under the guise of personal experientialism and reinforcing the linkage between climate and ethos as the appropriateness of a setting for human affairs. This ethical premise of climate stretches the horizon of sustainability as pertaining not only to man’s solitary relationship with natural phenomena—a predominant trend in contemporary discourse of sustainability—but also to man’s relationship with man. Overcoming climatic determinism—regional determinism, too—and expanding the ethics of the inter-personal to the level where the whole and particulars are joined through the dialectics of the mutually-negating opposites, Jin Baek develops a new thesis engaging with the very urgent issues inherent in sustainable architecture.

Crucially, the book explores examples that join climate and the dynamics of the inter-personal, including: Japanese vernacular residential architecture; the white residential architecture of Richard Neutra; contemporary architectural works and urban artifacts by Tadao Ando and Aldo Rossi.

Beautifully illustrated, this book is an important contribution to the discourse which surrounds architecture, climate and ethics and encourages the reader to think more broadly about how to respond to the current challenges facing the profession.

WOJR: Organization for Architecture is an innovative group of designers based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who are committed to the idea of architecture as a form of cultural production, engaging the intersections of art, architecture, and urbanism. With this idea at its foundation, ‘Room for Artifacts’ contains a collection of sixteen architectural artifacts designed by WOJR—a mask, a church, a labyrinth, a dwelling, a bust, and a series of totems, among others.

The artifacts are presented three times throughout the book—in conceptual drawings, architectural drawings, and images. Certain characteristics recur, such as symmetry, frontality, figurality, proportionality, and the play between flatness and depth, underscoring WOJR’s preoccupation with the fundamental aspects of architectural form that are rich in historical precedent. ‘Room for Artifacts’ offers a new way to explore the role of architectural representation in a contemporary context, looking at how architects can invoke aspects of ideologies from architects of the past while establishing a progressive agenda for a forward-looking body of work.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) often spent time in San Francisco, which he called “the most charming city in America.” Paul V. Turner looks at the architect’s complex and evolving relationship with the city, surveying the full body of Wright’s work in the Bay Area—roughly thirty projects, a third of which were built. Spanning 1900 to 1959, they include houses, a gift shop, a civic center, a skyscraper, a church, an industrial building, a mortuary, and a bridge across the San Francisco Bay. The unbuilt structures are among Wright’s most innovative, and the diverse reasons for their failure counter long-held stereotypes about the architect.

Wright’s Bay Area projects are published together here for the first time, along with previously unpublished correspondence between Wright and his clients, as well as his Bay Area associate Aaron Green. Stories from San Francisco newspapers portray the media’s changing positions on Wright—from his early personal scandals to his later roles as eccentric provocateur and celebrated creative genius. Beautifully illustrated with the architect’s original drawings and plans, ‘Frank Lloyd Wright and San Francisco’ highlights aspects of the architect’s career that have never before been explored, inspiring a new understanding of Wright, his personal and client interactions, and his work.

As a child, architect Arna Mačkić experienced firsthand the Bosnian civil war, and with her family she fled her native country for the Netherlands. In 1999, she was able to visit bosnia and the city of Mostar again for the first time to witness the utter devastation—the war had left seventy percent of the buildings destroyed. This experience inspired Mačkić’s research to explore the emotional effects of war damage on a city’s inhabitants and the possibilities for rebuilding collective and inclusive identities through architecture.

‘Mortal Cities and Forgotten Monuments’ tells a moving story of architecture and history. The first two parts of the book provide historical background on the war in Bosnia and its relationship to the built environment of the region. The final section demonstrates Mačkić’s ideas for architectural interventions, applying a new design language that goes beyond political religious, or cultural interpretations—an openness that allows it avoid tensions and claims of truth without ignoring or denying the past. Using this as a foundation, she proposes designs for urban and public space that are simultaneously rooted in ancient traditions while looking toward the future.
